The fixes for this problem on all tell you to create a recovery disk, but you see that is not an option in my case, apparently. I've already spent many more hours dealing with this than is reasonable. I've had Windows updates kill two laptops in the last 5 years or so, and I don't want it to happen a third time. Fortunately, the machine is still functional. If I had any choice in the matter, I would not accept any Windows updates at all, but I don't have any such choice. I strongly suspect this is all the fault of a recent Windows update. The SrtTrail.txt log file tells me "Boot critical file c:\efi\microsoft\boot\resources\custom\bootres.dll is corrupt." Restart Windows and run sfc again." But of course this leads me right back to the autorepair failure. That fails with the message "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. There's no indication whatsoever of what the problem is or how to fix it, of course, so a little Googling tells me it could be a corrupt system file somewhere, and that I should run sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt. This is after putting about 3.5 GB on the drive. I put a thumb drive with 16 GB free on it in a USB slot and started the "create recovery drive" process, which runs for several minutes before telling me it can't finish the job. I've had this laptop three months, and it's started behaving strangely - BSODs, tries to autorepair hard drive on boot but fails, etc - so I wanted to create a USB recovery drive.
